Rights-based management in international tuna fisheries

A recent FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Technical Paper, Rights-based management in international tuna fisheries, discusses rights-based management of international tuna fisheries that directly addresses the incomplete or absent property rights that create the incentives for overfishing, overcapacity, and failure to capture the full social and economic benefits that are possible. While rights-based management is not a panacea and does not address all issues, it can underpin sustainable fisheries, matching capacity with total allowable catches and sustainable fishing opportunities, realization of full social and economic benefits, and wealth creation.
